Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS) was born in 846 CE in Medina. He was the eleventh Imam and is known as "al-Askari" (the one who lived in the military camp). He lived under house arrest in Samarra and prepared the Shia community for the occultation of his son, Imam Mahdi (AS). He was martyred by poisoning in 874 CE in Samarra.
